A sad day for Peter Moody has continued with his star mare Typhoon Tracy retired following her narrow victory in Saturday’s Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m).

Earlier today, Moody announced that his top filly One Last Dance was out of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

But it was news of the reigning Horse of the Year’s retirement which set social networks on fire, with many Australian racing fans taking to Twitter to register their surprise at Moody’s decision.

The official Moody Racing account announced: “Our reigning HOTY Typhoon Tracy has officially been retired…she needs to do no more…”

The mare was back to her best on Saturday, defeating Heart of Dreams narrowly.

However, Moody said today that she had given everything she had in the Orr.

“She gave her absolute all in that race and is still fatigued 72 hours after the run,” Moody told Racing Victoria.

“She didn’t suffer a career-ending injury.”

“We could have freshened her up for a tilt at the Brisbane winter carnival, but she’s achieved great things already so we’ve decided to retire her.”

“She’s been amazing to me and I’ll be forever grateful for the success she’s given me and her owners.”

A touted match race with More Joyous in two weeks time in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) was to be used as a drawcard for a stellar day of racing.

Typhoon Tracy retires with an imposing record of 11 wins and 5 placings from 20 starts, including six at Group 1 level.

She won $2.44 million in earnings.
